The Story Behind the Hero
Elijah was a prophet during a dark time in Israel's history when King Ahab and Queen Jezebel led the nation into Baal worship. Elijah boldly confronted the king and declared a drought as judgment for Israel's idolatry.
On Mount Carmel, Elijah challenged 450 prophets of Baal to a contest to prove who was the true God. When the prophets of Baal failed, Elijah prayed, and God sent fire from heaven that consumed the sacrifice, the altar, and even the water around it.
Elijah experienced God's provision through ravens and a widow, witnessed mighty miracles, and heard God's "still small voice" in a cave. At the end of his ministry, Elijah did not die but was taken up to heaven in a chariot of fire.
He appeared with Moses at Jesus' transfiguration, representing the prophets while Moses represented the law.
